dreams

2007-03-30

Last night .. I dreamt about................SNAKES!!

All I can remember is a very large white snake .. climbing up a side of a house...A bit odd..

I was curious as to what it meant.. so I found a dream analyzing site...Any one else care to share any dreams??

maybe I should start writing them down. I usually can remember someparts.

Here's what I found...

Snakes

dream interpretation
meaning of dream
In some cultures snakes are highly regarded and symbolize the ability to transcend into higher levels of consciousness or into areas of knowledge that exist outside perceived time and space. In the pre-Christian days, snakes were considered symbols of fertility, healing, and nurturing (the healing serpent representing a god). Post Adam and Eve, snakes are often considered symbols of temptation and evil, anger, and envy. Snakes emerging out of the ground may represent your unconscious or repressed materials coming to your conscious mind. Freud thought that the snake was a phallic symbol. It is amazing how many people have snake dreams! Most snake dreams seem to be disturbing and they leave the dreamer feeling anxious and afraid. There are no simple interpretations to the snake dreams. Each dreamer must consider their own situation and all of the details of the dream. Sometimes snakes may be phallic symbols and other times they represent negativity in our lives that hampers our progress and constantly threatens us. In the long run the snake may be a positive symbol; it may represent difficulties that lead us to the center of personality and result in feelings of completeness.

ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED IN KINDERGARTEN

2007-03-27

  • Share everything.
  • Play fair.
  • Don't hit people.
  • Put things back where you found them.
  • Clean up your own mess.
  • Don't take things that aren't yours.
  • Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
  • Wash your hands before you eat.
  • Flush.
  • Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
  • Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
  • Take a nap every afternoon.
  • When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.
  • Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
  • Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we.
  • And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK.
  •  Take any one of those items and extrapolate it into sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your family life or your work or government or your world and it holds true and clear and firm. Think what a better world it would be if we all - the whole world - had cookies and milk at about 3 o'clock in the afternoon and then lay down with our blankies for a nap. Or if all governments had as a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own mess.

And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out in the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

  • SOME PEOPLE OFTEN FORGET THESE RULES LATER IN LIFE..  MAYBE WE SHOULD TAKE THE TIME TO STOP.. AND REMEMBER.

accents

2007-03-27

What is it with accents?

And why do women fall for a foriegn accents so easily? Is it only women or do men fall subject to this theory too? Is it just in the different sounds of the words? The words meaning never changes...so what makes it sound more appealing from a person with a different accent than ourselves? Recently I  noticed myself caught up in listening to a new co-worker talk and it wasn't the subject matter I seemed to be interested in...jit was just hearing how the words sounded...*smile*

where new words come from

2007-03-22

 from www.dictionary.com

Where do new words come from?

Speakers do not confine themselves to existing, conventional units when using the English language; to express their exact meaning in a given context, they take advantage of the wide range of creative resources provided by the language. Many of these creations become more frequent and conventionalized over time. These new words and new senses of words show up in lexicographers' citation files and in electronic corpora (collections of writing and speech) that dictionary editors use as their data for determining dictionary inclusion. There are six ways new words are created according to John Algeo, a leading researcher of new words: 1) Combining - such as making compounds, adding affixes, 2) Shifting of meaning - old words with new meanings, 3) Shortening - abbreviations or acronyms, 4) Blending - combining parts of words to make new words, 5) Borrowing - words incorporated from other languages, and 6) Creating - making up words that have no connection to existing words. When new words succeed it may be because they have filled a gap in our vocabulary, or give an additional perspective to something familiar. But whether a new word survives and flourishes does not depend on whether it fills a perceived gap in the vocabulary and not even on whether it is useful. Rather, it depends on whether it "clicks" with speakers and writers of the language. A dictionary records new words; it is not their source. If dictionaries introduced new words, no one would know they were there! People invent new words and if they succeed, dictionary editors will then include them. We do learn new words from dictionaries, but they are words that are already established in the vocabulary. They may be new to you, but not to English. As far as a new word's inclusion in a dictionary, the lexicographers involved must determine whether a new word is a serious candidate for the dictionary and a place in our permanent vocabulary. Often this is based on the lexicographers' experience and knowledge, as there is no guarantee of a word's continued popularity in our extremely fast-changing world. In general, lexicographers base decisions on the collected citation file and corpus - for determining both what new words and new senses mean, but also for evidence that they are used with enough frequency to warrant inclusion in a dictionary. Dictionary editors often err on the side of including the latest words because it is a selling point for a dictionary's marketing department. If these new words actually die out, they can be weeded from the next edition of the dictionary.
